While the project revisits some of the tropes of the New Topographics era, the work underscores the distinctly twenty-first-century ecological issues that the anachronistic nature of this kind of community seems to deny: unpredictable access to water, elevated heat, unsustainable development. The shared concern that prompted the two photographers to begin documenting this community was not unfounded. A few months after they thought the project was finished, a wildfire swept through the area surrounding Tracy Hills, the aftermath of which they returned to capture. The book brings together images from both photographers, each working in their own distinct style and format, from the community before and after that devastating, but unsurprising, event. posthumous collaboration with my late Algerian father, who passed away unexpectedly in February 2022, in Toulouse, France. He always existed at a distance. I knew little about his dreams, struggles, and victories. I sublimate his life, from 1950s war-torn Algiers to the Agence France Presse Paris HQ, at the pinnacle of his photojournalist career in the 2000s. When I reentered his house in July 2022, it resembled a landfill. His archive was no different. I worked like an editor unafraid to make radical choices. Relationships started to form between bodies of work. They were free, fluid, and radiant. The archive attained a life of its own. To escape the drudgery of packing his house, I photographed the Toulouse neighborhoods where he grew up and lived, taking pictures while pondering displacement and fractured roots. &nbsp;All the pictures I cataloged, scanned, made, and incorporated in this project are asymptotic. Conclusions remain latent. Perhaps light truly is the best disinfectant. _ A photobook dummy was conceived, designed, and produced within Penumbra Foundation‘s 2024 Long-Term Program (Photobooks).&nbsp; <img width="1875" Biophilia Treehouse is an offering to birds and a transdisciplinary project&nbsp;rooted in community-driven practices. I have been involved in the project since fall 2019 as a Senior Researcher at the UCLA DMA Counterforce Lab.&nbsp; As the team lead of communications, I acquired a lot of airborne and ground-level footage over the past two years. I also co-designed, printed, and hung a large exhibition in the newly minted Untitled space at the UCLA Broad Art Center on view from April to May 2023. Ultimately, the Biophilia Treehouse project is public arts initiative to create and grow a series of living sculptures using native trees and plants that constitute a complete ecosystem for some of LA’s most threatened birds. oined the UCLA DMA Counterforce Lab in October 2019, this was the first project I engaged in. Almost four years later, in April 2023, with our truly transdisciplinary efforts and the onboarding of many talented undergraduate students, we inaugurated the first iteration at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino, California, home of the Sisters of Social Service. We are grateful for the Sisters’ support and their input through ethnographic, and value-mapping workshops which led us to design of insignia that reflect the unique relationship the Sisters have with the land. 2019, the Pacific Ocean is the first place I intentionally visited. None of LA’s classic landmarks were interesting to me. Instead, I wanted to touch and commune with the ocean.On my way, I walked through the Palisades Park. Perched on the Santa Monica Bluffs, the park is a series of manicured landscapes overlooking the Bay of Santa Monica and the Pacific Ocean. Underneath the park, the iconic Pacific Coast Highway sustains heavy traffic throughout the day and creates a constant roar.It turns out the Palisades Park is where the historic transcontinental east-west US Route 66 terminates and as such, it is one of the westernmost sites of the country. We can’t go any further west from there.&nbsp;Visitors and passersby keep a safe distance from a precipitous drop leaning against a heavy concrete guardrail whose sinuous path is a motif of finis terræ.The park is also a place of extreme socio-economic contrasts: wealthy tourists snap selfies against the concrete guardrail and immaculate blue skies, while homeless people are laying in the shade and on lawns surrounded by their belongings.&nbsp; This project draws from the etymological root of “palisade” that comes from French palissade, a “picket fence,” to contend with the crumbling master-planned community in the San Joaquin Valley, two hours east of San Francisco, California.&nbsp;Large freeway billboards indicate the locations of the new villages coming soon on the former dry grazing fields that slope down to the flat desert floor. The grasslands have been aggressively graded and paved. Cheaply constructed houses with weak beams, thin plywood, and flimsy plastic siding sprawl the landscape. Rolls of artificial turf are piled up, ready to be unfurled into new lawns.Even in the midst of a climate crisis, rising&nbsp;housing costs are pushing families into these far-flung “exurbs” like Tracy Hills, which are being developed out beyond the suburbs. &nbsp;Now fifty years since Adams published The New West, what has improved with our current condition? Commission mentored by Jim Goldberg (Magnum Photos), Alejandro Cartagena, Mickey Smith and Carlos Loret de Mola.Reflecting on the “Two Years After the Storm” phrase, I couldn’t find fitting words to describe the devastating effects of the pandemic. After all, I arrived in Los Angeles in October 2019 then on March 22, 2020, we went into lockdown. Right when I had gotten my bearings, the world went upside down.Throughout the pandemic, I could rely on a steady job – teaching and doing research at UCLA Design Media Arts – and a strong support system at the community house where I lived then. However, the storm wrought by the pandemic in Los Angeles was close to a category five hurricane, figuratively speaking. It was a true bifurcation point and little of what we knew in 2019 fully recovered.Photographically, I built on my Telotypes series to follow the storm track and the visible damage it left in its wake. I walked and biked a lot across the westside of Los Angeles. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Los Angeles ground to a halt. &nbsp; I watched the inflection the pandemic forced upon us from a large community house on Hi Point Street in Mid-City. As I was new to LA, this house was a cocoon where I could process the raw visual encounters I made walking and biking the city. Traversing Los Angeles by foot afforded me viewpoints that driving speeds would have made disappear in a blur.&nbsp; While walking, I forged the word "telotype" with the Greek stems τέλος (end, boundary, border, extremity) and τύπος (mark, figure, outline), consciously nodding to The Prototype Works, a series Lewis Baltz completed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Each telotype is a collection of complex, often conflicting emotions processing what remains once LA's insatiable metabolism has crushed light, space, matter and form. -This series culminated in a isn’t the proverbial wilderness, devoid of human installations and transformations. From glossy brochures, to transatlantic flight routes, or round tours such as the “Golden Circle,” Icelandic nature is the product of a long sequence of transformations. Since 2010, tourism in Iceland has been growing exponentially, surpassing the traditional industries of fishing and agriculture.&nbsp; Between 2014-2017, I photographed the vanishing frontier between nature and human infrastructure on the Reykjanes peninsula, where two thirds of the Icelandic population live, extending outward from Reykjavík.I photographed what impeccable brochure pictures don’t show and yet, are made of: quarries, industrial areas, and new developments sprawling on lava fields.&nbsp;There, the price of “nature tourism” became tangible.
