What began as a brief stay at Iceland’s premiere organic farm in September 2010, initiated a long-term love story with the people and landscape of Iceland.
Situated in Vallanes, a fertile peninsula east of Lagarfljót Lake near Egilsstaðir in Eastern Iceland, the Móðir Jörð (Mother Earth) organic farm welcome volunteer workers from all continents. Most of them were at crossroads in their lives, retreating to Iceland to get on a new track.
Work was hard. Hours were spent crawling on ice-cold soil. More than a farm, it was a community of resolutely ecologically-minded folks. During winter storms, the farm was completely isolated. Our rare days off were spent cooking, baking, hiking, reading, hunting, fishing, and cultivating the land.
Despite Iceland’s wild climate, the farm has been a pioneer organic farming in Iceland, growing and selling produce, fresh herbs, and grains
Eymundur, the farmer and a certified yoga teacher, hosted cohorts of volunteers with gratitude and patience. Working the land was a form of spirituality.
This early series was a fully-committed leap into crafting environmental stories, turning my lens to the rugged land and the people who shape it.
